The Categories of Allergy Symptoms

An allergy is the reaction of the immune system when it comes in contact with a foreign substance. It is in a way a wrong response of the body since the immune system triggers a harmful effect on the body. The cause of allergies are various things called "allergens", which are most harmless for most people. There are some people, though, that have an immune system that is sensitive to these allergies. As a result, adverse symptoms can be observed in people who come in contact with their types of allergens.

The various allergy symptoms that are observed in people when they are having an attack after they come in contact with an allergen can be classified into three categories according to their severity. The first group of symptoms are classified as mild reactions to allergens. They are local symptoms since their manifestations are just visible in one specific part of the body and they do not spread to the other parts of the body. The examples of these symptoms are itchy and watery eyes, rashes and hives, and congestion.

The next category of allergy symptoms are moderate reactions. These are more severe than mild reactions since they usually have an effect with the rest of the body. An example of this is breathing difficulty that affects the whole person's body or itchiness that spreads to the different parts of the body.

The third group of kind of allergy symptoms is the most severe of all, which are called anaphylaxis. Although this rarely occurs in a person, they are serious allergy symptoms that can even be life-threatening. Anaphylaxis is systemic, meaning, it affects the whole body. It is common for this allergy symptom to start with a mild manifestation and progress to more severe reactions. For instance, this could start with a mild symptom such as itching of the face or of the eyes, then eventually the whole body may swell. Other more serious manifestations may follow, like cramps, abdominal pain, diarrhea, vomiting, and hives.
